Top Three Tips for Keeping Your RV Fridge Running

Your RV refrigerator operates differently than the fridge in your house. There are no moving parts, other than a fan, and it works on the principal of taking heat out, rather than putting cold in. It may run on LP gas (propane), battery (12 volt) or electricity (from a traditional power supply or a generator). To keep your little fridge running smoothly, you’ll want to follow these three tips.

1. Keep it clean.

Most people prefer a clean fridge, but to keep it running smoothly you’ll want to clean the hidden parts regularly.

  • Check the vents for nesting material, leaves and other debris at least twice per year
  • Remove soot from the flue
  • Use compressed air to clean, not water or solvents

2. Keep the air flowing.

Leave space between food items for air to circulate. Set a small, battery-operated fan in the bottom of the fridge and point it upwards. Keeping cold air moving through the interior lets your fridge work more efficiently.

3. Only put cold food in your fridge.

Taking a hot pot of soup off the stove and placing it in the fridge will cause the temperature inside to skyrocket and the fridge to work overtime. Make sure that anything you put in the fridge is already cold. Items placed in the freezer compartment should already be frozen.
